Revised Police Act to Strengthen National Police Commission

The revision of Law No. 2 of 2002 on the Indonesian National Police (Polri) will regulate the strengthening of the National Police Commission (Kompolnas). Minister of Law Supratman Andi Agtas explained there are five points to consider in the Polri law revision. First, strengthening the principles of transparency, professionalism, accountability, and humanity in the implementation of Polri’s duties and authority. Second, restructuring the placement of active Polri members in positions outside the Polri structure. Third, adjusting the retirement age regulations for Polri members as part of professional human resource development aligned with organisational and national interests. Fourth, enhancing the police education curriculum to include human rights protection, democracy, and humanitarian principles. “Lastly, strengthening the institutional framework of the National Police Commission, including adding tasks and authorities, and restructuring membership through open, transparent, and competency-based mechanisms,” Supratman stated during a working meeting with Commission III of the House of Representatives (DPR RI) on Monday (25 May). Supratman said the government’s detailed response regarding the Polri law revision would be submitted in the Problem Inventory List (DIM). He apologised to Commission III as the DIM prepared by the government could not be delivered during today’s meeting. “Mr Chairman, we apologise, today’s DIM cannot be submitted to the leadership and members of Commission III as our government team still requires time to consult and discuss the draft law,” Supratman said. “Once again, we request more time, and we will submit the DIM for the next legislative session,” he added.
