Revised Law Passed, Persons with Disabilities Can Now Serve as Police Officers
The Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR) has officially ratified the revision of the Law on the National Police of the Republic of Indonesia. Under the latest Police Law, persons with disabilities can be appointed as members of the National Police if they meet the requirements. This provision is stipulated in Article 21, paragraph 2 of the revised Law on the Third Amendment to Law Number 2 of 2002 concerning the National Police of the Republic of Indonesia. “Indonesian citizens with disabilities may be appointed as members of the National Police of the Republic of Indonesia as long as they possess the competencies required by the National Police of the Republic of Indonesia,” reads Article 21, paragraph 2. The full text of Article 21 of the latest Police Law is as follows: Article 21 (1) To be appointed as a Member of the National Police of the Republic of Indonesia, a candidate must meet at least the following requirements: a. an Indonesian citizen; b. faithful and devoted to God Almighty; c. loyal to the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia based on Pancasila and the 1945 Constitution of the Republic of Indonesia; d. educated at least to senior high school level or equivalent; e. a minimum age of 18 (eighteen) years; f. physically and mentally healthy; g. never sentenced to imprisonment; h. honest, fair, and of good conduct; and i. pass the formation education and training for Members of the National Police of the Republic of Indonesia conducted by the National Police of the Republic of Indonesia. (2) Indonesian citizens with disabilities may be appointed as Members of the National Police of the Republic of Indonesia as long as they possess the competencies required by the National Police of the Republic of Indonesia. (3) Further provisions regarding the requirements for the appointment and development of members of the National Police of the Republic of Indonesia as referred to in paragraphs (1) and (2) shall be regulated by a National Police of the Republic of Indonesia Regulation. The decision was taken during the 21st plenary session of the 5th session period for the 2025-2026 session year. The session was held in the plenary room of the Nusantara II building, Senayan, Central Jakarta. The ratification was taken under the second-level deliberation agenda, which was also attended by government representatives and National Police Chief Listyo Sigit Prabowo. The meeting was chaired by Deputy Speaker of the DPR RI Sufmi Dasco Ahmad. Deputy Speakers Saan Mustopa, Cucun Ahmad Syamsurijal, and Sari Yuliati were also present.
