Jakarta — Coal export duties remain unapplied despite the Ministry of Finance’s plan to begin collection in early 2026.

To date, Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa has yet to issue the Minister of Finance Regulation (PMK) governing the mechanism for collecting coal export duties, despite confirming the policy would take effect from 1 January 2026.

Febrio N. Kacaribu, Director General of the Directorate of Economic and Fiscal Strategy, stated that the Ministry of Finance is still finalising the regulations. “We are finalising it and will announce soon. We hope there will be a contribution to state revenue,” he said on Wednesday (11 March).

Febrio also highlighted that the government is monitoring the upward trend in global coal prices. He acknowledged that the government also wants to capitalise on this price increase momentum to boost state revenue.

At the end of 2025, Purbaya disclosed that the coal export duty tariff would be applied according to prevailing coal prices. He indicated the tiered tariff structure would range from 5%, 8%, to 11%. “If I recall correctly, it was proposed to depend on the coal price. There is 5%, there is 8%, there is 11% depending on the coal price level,” he said.
