Revealed: Conversation Between Xi Jinping and Saudi Crown Prince on the Strait of Hormuz
Chinese President Xi Jinping spoke by telephone with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. In the conversation, Xi Jinping called for the shipping route in the Strait of Hormuz to remain open.
Cited from detikFinance on Tuesday (21/4/2026), the conversation between Xi Jinping and the Saudi Crown Prince took place after his meeting in Beijing last week with the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi. At that time, he emphasised the importance of compliance with international law.
“The Strait of Hormuz must remain open for normal shipping, as this is a common interest of regional countries and the international community,” said Xi, as reported by Reuters on Monday (20/4).
Xi stated that China supports Middle Eastern countries in determining their own future. He also encouraged long-term stability and peace in the region.
In addition, China expressed concern over the renewed instability around the strategic route. The US-Iran ceasefire faces new pressures following the US seizure of an Iranian cargo ship and signals from Tehran that it is not ready to engage in new peace talks.
It is known that China is the main buyer of Iranian crude oil. Iran itself has closed most of the strait route to ships other than its own since the war began with the US and Israel last February. Meanwhile, Washington has imposed a blockade on Iranian ships since last week.
China is pushing for an immediate and comprehensive ceasefire and emphasises resolving the conflict through political and diplomatic channels. China’s Foreign Ministry urges all parties to comply with the ceasefire agreement.
