The Directorate General of Taxes (DJP) at the Ministry of Finance has revealed the latest data on old-age security (JHT) recipients among Indonesian workers. The data shows that the overwhelming majority of workers receive JHT benefits valued at under Rp 50 million, whilst only a small fraction of the public holds JHT balances above that amount.

Inge Diana Rismawanti, Director of Counselling, Services, and Public Relations at DJP, stated that participants with JHT balances exceeding Rp 50 million are very few, ranging from just 1% to 2%. Meanwhile, workers with JHT balances below Rp 50 million account for 95% of all BPJS Ketenagakerjaan participants. Based on data from the workers’ social security agency, out of 1,723,910 claims paid during the January to May 2026 period, a total of 1,645,469 claims, or 95.45%, had balances below Rp 50 million.

“As mentioned, 95% of JHT participants have balances below Rp 50 million. Those with balances between Rp 50 million and Rp 100 million make up only 2.9%, whilst participants with JHT above Rp 100 million account for just 1.65%,” Inge said during a media briefing at the DJP on Tuesday.

Inge added that even for participants with JHT balances exceeding Rp 50 million, the final tax rate remains light at just 5%. “The tax rate is still light, 5%, as long as the participant disburses the funds within two years of being declared retired,” she explained. Furthermore, JHT contributions paid by workers or employers have been excluded from Income Tax, thereby avoiding double taxation. “We hope the public understands that this is not a new government regulation and that there is no double taxation, as the tax on JHT is only imposed when the claim is disbursed,” she said.
