JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - The return flow for Eid al-Fitr 2026 is beginning to show a significant surge on Sumatra Island. Vehicle traffic on the Trans-Sumatra Toll Road (JTTS) has even been recorded to have jumped nearly fivefold compared to normal conditions.

PT Hutama Karya (Persero) reported that the total daily traffic on the operational toll road sections reached 257,546 vehicles on Monday (23/3/2026). This figure is up 184.20 percent from normal traffic.

The surge is triggered by high public mobility, both for return trips to hometowns and ongoing tourism activities during the Eid holiday.

Several toll road sections recorded extreme increases during Monday. The Padang-Sicincin Toll saw the highest rise at 459.85 percent, followed by the Sigli-Banda Aceh Toll Sections 2-6, which surged 455.03 percent.

In addition, significant increases also occurred on the Pekanbaru-XIII Koto Kampar Toll, up 308.45 percent, and the Kuala Tanjung-Tebing Tinggi-Parapat Toll, which increased 258.07 percent.

Meanwhile, toll sections operated functionally during the return flow also recorded high vehicle movements. The Sigli-Banda Aceh Toll Section 1 recorded 6,071 vehicles, while the Palembang-Betung Toll reached 6,453 vehicles.

Hutama Karya stated that traffic monitoring is being carried out continuously to ensure smoothness and safety for road users amid the return flow surge.

The company also urged the public to plan trips carefully, obey traffic signs, maintain safe distances, and ensure vehicle conditions and driver fitness are in top shape.

Road users are also advised to use rest areas wisely and to rest immediately if feeling fatigued, in order to maintain safety during the return journey.
