Retirement Age for Four-Star Police Generals May Be Extended by President
Commission III of the House of Representatives (DPR) has agreed upon provisions within the Draft Law (RUU) amending Law Number 2 of 2002 concerning the National Police (Polri). The amendment stipulates that the retirement age for four-star high-ranking officers (pati) may be extended by the President at the DPR Building, Jakarta, on Tuesday (9/6).
This is regulated under Article 30, paragraph (5), point c, which states: “Specifically for four-star high-ranking officers, the retirement age is a maximum of 60 years and may be extended by one year or as required, as determined by presidential decree.”
Deputy Minister of Law, Edward Omar Sharif Hiariej, explained that the phrase ‘or as required, as determined by presidential decree’ represents a key change in the Polri Draft Law agreed upon during meetings of the drafting and synchronisation teams. “The addition is the phrase ‘or as required, as determined by presidential decree’,” said Edward, commonly known as Eddy.
The Chairman of Commission III of the DPR, Habiburokhman, sought approval from members regarding the regulation. The Working Committee (Panja) for the Polri Draft Law has agreed that the retirement age for police members will be 59 years for the ranks of private (tamtama) and non-commissioned officers (bintara). Meanwhile, for junior officers, middle-ranking officers, and high-ranking officers, the age will be 60 years.
However, there are exceptions for police members holding functional positions as regulated by relevant legislation for functional officials. Furthermore, police members possessing specialised expertise and/or those highly needed in policing duties may have their retirement age extended for a maximum of two years, subject to a proposal by the Chief of the National Police (Kapolri).
The DPR RI has officially passed the Polri Draft Law into law during the Plenary Session held at the Nusantara II Building, Parliament Complex, Senayan, Jakarta, on Tuesday (9/6/2026).
