Retirement Age Extended to 60 Years in New Police Law, Here's Chief Sigit's Response
Jakarta - The Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI), together with the government, has officially ratified the revision of the Law on the Indonesian National Police (UU Polri). National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo is confident that the increase in the police retirement age limit contained in the revision will not hinder careers.
‘The retirement age limit, I think, but I haven’t read it yet, has been regulated so that issues regarding bottlenecks, regarding a position getting stuck, have all been addressed,’ Sigit said at a press conference at the DPR Building, Jakarta, on Tuesday.
The National Police Chief stated that the police force will follow up on the mandate of the law to provide the services expected by the public and to shape an institutional posture that the public can trust. ‘And most importantly, how the Police can become more humanist, more professional, and more loved by the community in the future,’ he said.
The Chief emphasised the institution’s commitment to adapt to the challenges and developments of the times, which are feared to potentially cause various new problems. Sigit also stressed that efforts to create and maintain security and public order stability are a primary requirement to support the realisation of national development.
A plenary session of the DPR RI on Tuesday approved the Bill on the Third Amendment to Law Number 2 of 2002 concerning the Indonesian National Police to be enacted into law. One of the provisions stipulated in the bill is the increase in the retirement age limit for police members.
Article 30 paragraph (5) letter c stipulates that the maximum retirement age for high-ranking four-star officers is 60 years. However, this limit can be extended by one year or according to needs determined by a presidential decree.
The retirement age limit for non-commissioned officers is 59 years, while for first-level, mid-level, and high-ranking officers it is 60 years. This retirement age limit does not apply to police members holding functional positions, whose retirement age is subject to the relevant statutory provisions.
Police members who possess special expertise and/or are critically needed for police duties may have their retirement age limit extended by a maximum of two years upon the proposal of the National Police Chief, or according to needs determined by a presidential decree.
