Retired TNI Generals Provide Input on US Airspace Access Permit
Defence Minister (Menhan) Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin and retired TNI personnel discussed the Letter of Intent (LoI), or statement of intent, regarding the airspace transit permit submitted by the United States (US). Head of the Defence Information Bureau of the Ministry of Defence (Kemenhan), Brigadier General Rico Ricardo Sirait, stated that the retired TNI members provided analysis based on several considerations. However, Rico did not explain the details. “Retired personnel naturally have considerations and very good analyses,” he said at the Ministry of Defence building, West Medan Merdeka, Central Jakarta, on Friday, 24 April 2026. The input was conveyed during a meeting between the Defence Minister and several retired personnel as well as former TNI Commanders at the Kemenhan building on the same day. Rico mentioned that the government plans to discuss the airspace transit permit proposal with relevant ministries and the DPR. “So it might also be discussed with relevant ministries and agencies, with the DPR, regarding that Letter of Intent,” he said. In addition to the airspace transit issue, the retired personnel also provided input on peacekeeping forces in Lebanon and geopolitical developments in the Strait of Hormuz. The input will serve as evaluation material in formulating defence policies. Several figures present at the meeting included former ABRI Commander Wiranto, Yudo Margono, Agus Suhartono, Andika Perkasa, and Gatot Nurmantyo. Also present were Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs Djamari Chaniago and Presidential Special Advisor for National Defence Dudung Abdurachman. In addition, Army Chief of Staff Maruli Simanjuntak, Navy Chief of Staff Admiral Muhammad Ali, and Air Force Chief of Staff Tonny Harjono were in attendance. TNI Deputy Commander Tandyo Budi Revita also joined the closed meeting, which lasted around three hours. This issue emerged after foreign media reports revealed secret documents related to the United States’ efforts to obtain comprehensive airspace transit access (blanket overflight access) in Indonesian territory. The online media The Sunday Guardian reported on Sunday, 12 April 2026, that there were secret US defence documents to secure airspace transit access for US military aircraft through Indonesian airspace. The documents are said to follow a meeting between President Prabowo Subianto and US President Donald Trump in Washington, D.C., last February. Foreign Minister Sugiono stated that the government will prioritise national interests and sovereignty in the context of airspace transit permits in Indonesian territory. The statement was made by the Foreign Minister in relation to plans for comprehensive flight access cooperation, or blanket overflight access, in Indonesian airspace with the United States.
