Retaliating for Wedding Bombing, Iran Strikes US Troop Barracks in Jordan
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has launched a missile attack against United States Marine bases in Jordan, disregarding warnings from US President Donald Trump to cease attacks.
According to Al Jazeera on Wednesday (2/9/2026), the IRGC stated that this operation was a retaliatory strike against the US military, which had previously attacked a wedding party in the city of Sirik, southern Iran. That attack resulted in several deaths, including a child.
“In response to this brutal crime, the brave fighters of the IRGC Air Force… launched heavy ballistic missile attacks against the US Marine barracks in Jordan, known as Camp Titina,” the statement read.
The IRGC claimed the missiles struck a significant number of troops, military installations, and attack helicopters.
Meanwhile, the Jordanian military stated that it had intercepted 10 of the 13 Iranian missiles launched towards the country, while the remaining three landed in open areas. “The incident was handled according to established operational procedures,” the statement noted. “Fortunately, no casualties or loss of life were recorded.”
Iran’s response tests Trump’s latest threat and risks further escalating the conflict. Trump had previously stated that if Iran retaliated against American attacks, Iran would “be hit again at a much harder and higher level.”
Fighting reignited on Tuesday (1/9) morning when the US military bombarded several targets in southern Iran. The US military’s Central Command (CENTCOM), based in the Middle East, stated that they had struck IRGC sites.
“These strikes follow recent attack attempts by the IRGC against commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz and against US military personnel stationed in the region,” CENTCOM said.
Iran’s semi-official news agency, Tasnim, reported explosions in the south of the country, including Konarak, Bandar Abbas, and Qeshm Island. The Iranian news agency Fars reported that one attack hit a house in Sirik during a wedding celebration, killing at least four people.
