The Indonesian retail market is weathering the ongoing economic crisis, the latest Nielsen survey shows.
"Despite an increase in prices, consumers are still spending more money" Nielsen Company retail executive director Teguh Yunanto said on Tuesday.
The survey shows that the country's retail market grew 7.4 percent between January and April this year.
"Yes it is true that the retail market showed sluggish growth compared to the first quarter of last year when the retail market grew 21.9 percent," Teguh said.
"The growth of the retail market, including modern and traditional markets, has been consistent," Teguh said, adding that the modern market enjoyed 13.4 percent growth while the traditional market grew by 4.1 percent.
The survey polled 2,800 urban households and 1,600 rural housholds in Jakarta, Bogor, Tangerang, Bekasi, Bandung, Surabaya, Semarang, Medan and rural areas in Java. (Naf)
