I was saddened to read the report about Dr. Mochtadi in
Semarang, Central Java (Kompas, May 13, 1995). He will be
stripped of his position because he unveiled the outcome of his
research on the sexual behavior of teenagers in Semarang. As a
researcher myself, I am concerned at the attitude of the Central
Java legislators of Commission E and the chief of health services
in the province.

Basically, it is intellectual harassment, using the pretext of
social propriety for political gains. In my opinion, such an
attitude reflects insensitivity at the changes taking place in
society. In fact social changes can only be detected through
careful research, which is methodologically accountable.

Moreover, results of research can be used as an useful input
for society and for decision makers in anticipating future
challenges.
