Results of Prabowo's Visit to Miangas and Gorontalo
President Prabowo Subianto visited Miangas Island and Gorontalo after attending the 48th ASEAN Summit in Cebu, Philippines, on Saturday, 9 May 2026.
Miangas is the island closest to the Indonesia-Philippines border. It is located in the Talaud Islands Regency, North Sulawesi. Meanwhile, in Gorontalo City, Prabowo inspected the Merah Putih Fishermen’s Village in South Leato Village, Sulawesi Island.
The Gerindra Party Chairman conveyed several promises and claims from his administration alongside Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka. Prabowo also mentioned that he is the second president to visit Miangas after his predecessor Joko Widodo.
Here are the facts from Prabowo’s visit to Miangas and Gorontalo:
- Prabowo Claims Indonesia is Respected in ASEAN Due to Self-Sufficiency
Prabowo claimed that Indonesia is increasingly respected among ASEAN countries because of food self-sufficiency. “We just came from the Philippines attending the ASEAN Summit. We are highly respected because we are now self-sufficient in food,” said Prabowo as broadcast by the Presidential Secretariat on Saturday, 9 May 2026.
Prabowo gave examples of several types of food that he claimed Indonesia now produces domestically, eliminating the need for imports. He mentioned rice and corn.
The former defence minister stated that the Indonesian nation must stand on its own feet. Therefore, he wants his government to achieve food self-sufficiency and energy self-sufficiency.
- Additional 3 Smart Boards in Every School
Prabowo said there will be an addition of three interactive screen boards or smart boards in every school this year. Thus, each school will have a total of four interactive screens after the government distributed one digital interactive whiteboard last year.
Including in Gorontalo, schools have received one smart screen. Prabowo also said the number will be increased. “Starting this year, every school will receive three (smart boards),” he stated.
Prabowo claimed that smart boards will help teachers in remote areas. “Teachers in difficult places can be assisted from the centre, with lessons, additional syllabi, and support materials,” he said.
The government, he added, can also monitor all classes across Indonesia from Jakarta using smart boards. “So if there are teachers who don’t show up, we can see which teachers are absent that day,” said Prabowo.
- Target 1,386 Fishermen’s Villages Completed by December
Prabowo targets 1,386 Merah Putih Fishermen’s Villages to be completed by the end of 2026. “This year, in December, we will inaugurate 1,386 fishing villages across Indonesia,” said Prabowo during his visit to Miangas Island.
Prabowo stated that the Merah Putih Fishermen’s Villages will have various facilities for fishermen. These facilities range from ice makers, access to shrimp seeds, to cold storage warehouses that can store seafood longer.
In addition, Prabowo said the fishing villages will also be equipped with special fuelling stations for fishing boats. “We will massively improve the conditions of fishermen across Indonesia,” said the former Commander General of the Special Forces Command.
Prabowo conveyed that one of the fishing villages will be built on Miangas Island and is targeted to be completed in five months if construction starts in June 2026. “Hopefully, there will be one fishing village here in a short time,” he said.
Prabowo also highlighted the addition of facilities on Miangas during the era of former president Joko Widodo. In 2016, Jokowi inaugurated the Miangas Airport, which was built since 2012.
Continuing those efforts, Prabowo now wants to build facilities to help fishermen there. “There’s already an airport; perhaps the catch can be marketed so that income increases,” he said. Currently, Prabowo stated, the government has provided boat assistance for Miangas. The boat weighs 15 gross tons.
- Renovate All Puskesmas in Indonesia
The Head of State wants to renovate all community health centres in Indonesia after inspecting the puskesmas facilities on Miangas Island. According to him, puskesmas in Indonesia have not been renovated for a long time.
“I just saw some puskesmas places; the Minister of Health (Budi Gunadi Sadikin) whispered to me that it has been several years since the time of Pak Harto (President Soeharto), puskesmas have not been renovated,” he said.
He promised to address all puskesmas in Indonesia as soon as possible. Prabowo claimed that improving health facilities is a priority for the government.
He was also grateful to see the field conditions directly, like in Miangas. “Finally, I’m grateful; I can see all the conditions and hopefully we will soon renovate them,” he said.
Prabowo’s arrival in Miangas was welcomed by several ministers from the Merah Putih Cabinet. Among them were the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Bahlil Lahadalia, the Minister of Defence Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin, and the Minister of Marine Affairs and Fisheries Sakti Wahyu Trenggono.
In addition, the Minister of Communication and Digital Meutya Hafid, the Minister of Public Works Dody Hanggodo, the Minister of Health Budi Gunadi Sadikin, and the Deputy Commander of the Indonesian National Armed Forces General Tandyo Budi Revita were present.
