Results of Crime Scene Investigation into the Death of an Indian Citizen in Surabaya Immigration Detention
The Sidoarjo Police Department’s Criminal Investigation Unit (Satreskrim) has revealed the results of the crime scene investigation and in-depth medical examination of the body of SN, a 38-year-old Indian citizen found dead in the detention room of the Class I Special TPI Surabaya Immigration Office. Based on the on-site evidence and autopsy results, the victim is believed to have died from drowning due to suicide.
The Head of the Sidoarjo Police Department’s Criminal Investigation Unit, Commissioner Siko Sesaria Putra Suma, stated that the motive behind the victim’s actions is strongly suspected to be related to psychological pressure caused by financial difficulties. In addition, the victim was known to be facing a child custody dispute with his ex-wife.
When officers arrived at the location, the victim’s body was found on the floor, covered with a polo shirt. According to witnesses, the victim’s roommate attempted to lower SN’s body to provide first aid, but the victim could not be saved.
The medical team, which conducted external and internal examinations (autopsy), found clinical signs of drowning consistent with a hanging case. There were pressure marks on the front, right, and left sides of the neck due to the ligature. In addition, there was dilation of blood vessels in the conjunctiva and bluish discoloration on the fingertips and toes. Examination of the internal organs showed spots of bleeding in the lungs, heart (liver), and brain tissue.
“The cause of death is blunt force trauma to the neck, which caused the blockage of the respiratory tract and blood vessels in the neck, resulting in the victim’s drowning or asphyxiation,” Siko said.
The results of the questioning of witnesses and the victim’s roommate revealed that SN was facing a heavy burden in life. The victim often complained about financial difficulties and had borrowed money from residents in the Sedati area but had difficulty repaying it.
This condition was exacerbated by family conflict. The victim was known to have divorced his wife, who is an Indonesian citizen (WNI), in 2019. To date, the two are still involved in a child custody dispute, with the child being under the care of the former wife.
The police estimate that the victim’s time of death occurred between 3 and 6 hours before the external examination was conducted. Currently, the body is still being handled according to consular procedures to be handed over to the family through the Honorary Consulate of India in Surabaya. (I-2)
