Restoration of 23 Temples in Besakih Complex to Cost Rp 203 Billion

Twenty-three temples in the sacred area of Pura Agung Besakih, Karangasem, Bali, are beginning restoration this year. The budget for arranging the parahyangan area amounts to Rp 203 billion, sourced from Special Financial Assistance (BKK) from Badung Regency.

Bali Governor Wayan Koster attended the foundation stone-laying ceremony for the temple arrangement project in the sacred Besakih complex on Friday (1/5/2026). The procession was combined with the ngeruwak and mulang dasar ceremonies according to Balinese Hindu tradition.

On that occasion, Koster stated that this arrangement project is the second phase of the Pura Agung Besakih area. The first phase had already been carried out, covering the parking area, trader kiosks, and others, with a budget of Rp 911 billion.

“For the second phase arrangement, we are carrying out restoration of the existing temple buildings in the sacred Besakih area,” said Koster on Friday (1/5/2026).

Koster revealed that the restoration of dozens of temples in Besakih is being done because their condition is already damaged, mossy, and the wood is brittle. According to him, the repairs are being done while maintaining the characteristics of the previous buildings. The project is targeted to be completed in November.

“I have long wanted to carry out arrangements at Pura Agung Besakih, even before becoming governor. So that the entire sacred area in Pura Besakih is well and beautifully arranged,” said Koster.

Meanwhile, Bendesa Adat Besakih Jro Mangku Widiartha said that several temples in the sacred Besakih area have not been touched by repairs for a long time. In fact, he stated that some temple buildings were last repaired 30 years ago.

“Most of the temple buildings that have not been repaired for a long time have mossy roofs and some are leaking. Likewise, the wood, penyengker, and others are damaged. With this arrangement, we are very grateful,” said Widiartha.
