The Tangerang Regency government has banned food stalls from operating outside the hours of 4pm to 4am during the month of Ramadan. The Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) has said the regulation should also take into account non-Muslim residents.

“The intention is good. But it could be managed with curtains so as not to disturb those who are fasting. Many residents, both non-Muslims and Muslims who are unable to fast, must also be considered,” PKS Central Executive Board chairman Mardani Ali Sera told reporters on Friday (20 February 2026).

Mardani said Islam never intended to make life difficult for its followers.

“Islam is a religion of mercy for all creation. The observance of fasting should bring ease and forgiveness,” he said.

Previously, the Tangerang Regency government established a policy restricting the operating hours of nightlife venues, restaurants and cafés during Ramadan 1447 Hijriah. The policy is said to have been routinely implemented in previous years.

The regulation on operating hour restrictions was issued through a regional government circular letter agreed upon by all leaders of the Tangerang Regency Regional Leadership Communication Forum (Forkopimda). Among the provisions, restaurants and food stalls are permitted to open only from 4pm to 4am Western Indonesian Time.

“For restaurants or food stalls, we have determined they may open from 4pm until 4am. Outside those hours, they are prohibited from opening,” said Tangerang Regent Moch Maesyal Rasyid following a coordination meeting with Forkopimda on Thursday (19 February 2026).
