Response to FHUI Case: Brian Tolerates No Violence on Campus
Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology (Kemdiktisaintek) has expressed its stance against tolerating any form of violence in the higher education environment. This was stated by the Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Technology (Mendiktisaintek) Brian Yuliarto in response to the recent case of violence at the Faculty of Law, University of Indonesia (FHUI). “Higher education must be a safe, dignified, and integrity-filled space for the entire academic community. Therefore, we emphasise that there must be no tolerance for any form of violence on campus, in any form,” said the Minister in an official statement in Jakarta on Tuesday. Minister Brian stated that higher education institutions are obliged to ensure a safe, inclusive environment free from all forms of violence, whether physical, verbal, psychological, sexual, or digital-based. In terms of policy, Brian explained that the handling of this case refers to Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology Regulation Number 55 of 2024 on the Prevention and Handling of Violence in the Higher Education Environment, which covers all forms of violence, including sexual violence, verbal, psychological, bullying, as well as discrimination and intolerance. This regulation requires every higher education institution to establish and strengthen the Task Force for the Prevention and Handling of Violence in the Higher Education Environment (Satgas PPKPT), and to guarantee protection and recovery for victims. If criminal elements are found in the handling process, continued Brian, law enforcement will refer to Law Number 12 of 2022 on Criminal Acts of Sexual Violence in accordance with applicable provisions. As a concrete step, he revealed, Kemdiktisaintek is coordinating with UI parties to ensure the handling process runs according to procedure, supervising the performance of Satgas PPKPT, ensuring victims receive protection, accompaniment, and recovery services, and encouraging transparency and accountability in the investigation process. As part of strengthening reporting access, the public and academic community can submit reports through the LAPOR! Channel (SP4N-LAPOR), Satgas PPKPT at each higher education institution, as well as through the official Kemdiktisaintek complaint channels at the Call Centre: 126, ult@kemdiktisaintek.go.id, and 085186069126. Meanwhile, Kemdiktisaintek has stated its commitment to ensuring the consistent implementation of policies on the prevention and handling of violence across all higher education institutions; strengthening prevention systems through education, supervision, and institutional reinforcement; encouraging the firm enforcement of administrative and legal sanctions; and guiding the creation of a campus culture that is safe, inclusive, and full of integrity. “Kemdiktisaintek emphasises that higher education must be a space that upholds humanitarian values, justice, and integrity, and is free from all forms of violence,” said Brian Yuliarto.
