Respecting differences
Respecting differences
President Soeharto reemphasized the importance of maintaining harmony within the society. In his speech on the occasion of the observance of the birthday of Prophet Muhammad, the president called on the nation's leaders, especially the religious leaders, to preserve harmony.
It has been ordained that the Indonesian nation came into being in its plurality. Differences of religions, ethnics and languages are a social reality in which the Indonesian state exists. Our approach to the differences should be positive so as to provide a favorable climate for the nation's development.
In the history of religions, the perception and understanding of a religion among the followers must develop. Absolute truth is inherent only in God. Man's interpretation of religion, however, is partial and relative in nature because of his limitations and links to age and certain cultures. God alone knows the exact meaning of His Commands.
Based on this perception man will act wisely, modestly and show great tolerance towards each other.
