Residents Welcome Temporary Pelican Crossing at Tendean, Hope for New Pedestrian Bridge Construction

The Jakarta Highways Agency (Dinas Bina Marga DKI Jakarta) has installed a temporary pelacan crossing during the reconstruction of the pedestrian bridge (JPO) on Jalan Kapten Tendean, South Jakarta, which was previously severely damaged. Local residents have welcomed the installation of the crossing.

Observations at the site on Friday (31/07/2026) show the pelican crossing is located approximately 30 metres west of the demolished Tendean bridge. A zebra crossing has been implemented, and the fencing that previously separated two different lanes has been removed, with paving blocks installed between the lanes.

While crossing lights have been installed, they were observed to be non-operational and undergoing repairs by officials during the site visit.

Ningsih (52), a local resident, stated that the pelican crossing is significantly helpful as it prevents pedestrians from having to walk long distances to alternative crossing points. She noted that the crossing is essential for those accessing the Mampang Post Office to pay utility bills, such as electricity and water. However, she expressed hope for the rapid reconstruction of the pedestrian bridge, citing fears of traffic accidents when crossing at street level.

Another resident, Heni (40), echoed these sentiments, noting that the area is a busy crossing point due to nearby residential areas, offices, and ongoing construction projects. While the temporary crossing is helpful, she emphasised that a pedestrian bridge is necessary for the safety of pedestrians, particularly school children returning home.
