Residents urged to demolish houses

JAKARTA (JP): North Jakarta Mayor H. Suprawito yesterday urged
residents living on Jl. Perintis Kemerdekaan to immediately
demolish their houses to make way for the development of public
parks along the street.

"If they do not want to demolish the houses themselves, we
will pull them down for them," he told reporters. But he refused
to say when the demolition, by city administration officers, will
be done.

Suprawito said several public parks will be built along the
street.

At the moment this location, on Jl.Perintis Kemerdekaan, is
occupied by 53 families which live in approximately 100 houses.

According to Suprawito the people have been living there since
1987, and under an agreement signed by them and city
administration officials, they have to move from the site when
the city administration decides it will use the land.(bas)
