Residents urge installation of lifts on Bekasi Station pedestrian bridge for elderly and pregnant women

Residents are calling for the pedestrian bridge (JPO) integrated with the second floor of Bekasi Station on Jalan Ir H Juanda to be equipped with lifts.

KRL passenger Shafa (30) said additional facilities like lifts would make the JPO more accessible for people with disabilities and pregnant women.

“There should be lifts near the JPO to facilitate access for people with disabilities, the elderly, and pregnant women,” Shafa said when interviewed by Kompas at the site on Tuesday, May 26, 2026.

“Additionally, KRL passengers can go directly to the station, which could reduce traffic congestion,” Shafa added.

He also suggested that pelican crossings with traffic light buttons could be a more comfortable alternative to the JPO.

“Because it shortens the distance. No need to climb stairs,” he said.

Another Bekasi resident, Fani (26), said traffic in the Bekasi Station area is often congested due to high pedestrian activity crossing the road.

“I hope with the JPO, traffic won’t be as bad as before,” Fani said.

She added that the JPO is expected to improve vehicle flow as KRL passengers can access the station without crossing the road.

“This way, the road can focus on moving vehicles,” she said.

However, Fani noted that traffic congestion in the area isn’t solely caused by pedestrians crossing.

“There are motorcycle taxis, minibuses, and shuttle vehicles stopping in the middle of the road, which also contribute to traffic jams,” Fani said.

Besides helping reduce congestion, Fani believes the JPO would also enhance safety for residents when crossing the road, especially during peak traffic hours.
