Residents, traders reject overpass plan

TANGERANG: Residents, Ciputat Market traders and local businesses in Tangerang have rejected a plan to construct an overpass to cope with the chronic traffic congestion in the busy district.

"An overpass is not the solution. The traffic jams are mainly caused by the absence of a nearby bus terminal, reckless drivers and the high number of sidewalk vendors who take up half of the road," Marsidang Sihombing of the Association of Traders and Land Owners (PPPT) told Detikcom on Monday.

The association has 120 members consisting of traders and landowners along Jl. Ir. Juanda and Jl. Dewi Sartika.

The PPPT also complained over the administration's proposed compensation of Rp 750,000 (US$86) per square meter, much lower than the taxable value of property in the area, about Rp 2 million per square meter. -- JP
