Residents Suffer Breathing Difficulties Due to Volcanic Ash from Anak Krakatau Eruption

Residents of Tejang Village on Sebesi Island, Rajabasa District, South Lampung Regency, have complained of breathing difficulties caused by volcanic ash from the eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau. According to residents, the ash has been carried by the wind and has been felt by the local community for up to three days.

Tejang Village Secretary Riko Iswanto said many residents have complained of respiratory problems due to the volcanic ash from Mount Anak Krakatau. “Many residents here have complained about the volcanic ash,” he said in South Lampung on Tuesday (18/8).

Local residents have been urged to wear masks to avoid respiratory problems caused by volcanic dust from Mount Anak Krakatau.

Activity at Mount Anak Krakatau has increased over the past few days. The volcano, located in the waters of the Sunda Strait, experienced 20 eruptions in a single day on Monday (17/8).

The highest eruption column was reported to have reached approximately 400 metres above the summit, or 557 metres above sea level.

Ash material can then be carried by the wind and affect areas around the volcano. Sebesi Island is one of the areas located close to Mount Anak Krakatau.
