Residents Renew Protests Demanding Permanent Halt to Kalideres Crematorium
Jakarta — Residents of Kalideres and Pegadungan in West Jakarta renewed their rejection of the Swarga Abadi funeral home and crematorium project on Saturday, 28 February 2026, demanding its permanent termination rather than temporary suspension.
Community coordinator Budiman Tandiono stated that the action was taken because the West Jakarta City Government’s temporary halt of the project was deemed unsatisfactory. “We are grateful to the Mayor for appreciating our request, but we are asking for it to be permanently stopped,” he said at the site.
According to Budiman, the crematorium development violates local regulations because it is located in a densely populated residential area. He further noted that the project site constitutes green open space and public facilities for resident use.
“This is a public facility and social facility for sports and green open space,” he stated.
Budiman added that residents have petitioned the national parliament (DPR) and regional legislature (DPRD) seeking clarification on the project. “We have written to DPR factions and DPRD to inquire, and the letter has been received by the PDIP faction. They will likely forward it to Commission A,” he said.
“They have demonstrated they do not have environmental impact assessment permission yet can still proceed, and moreover they are violating the law by constructing a crematorium here,” he added.
Budiman expressed hope that Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung would heed residents’ concerns. “Governor, please listen to us. This is the first time we are appealing to you directly. We are your supporters, this is our home, this is for our children’s future,” he said.
