Residents recount fire in Jatinegara, East Jakarta, starting at a printing shop

A house fire occurred on Jalan Cipinang Cempedak Raya, Jatinegara District, East Jakarta. Residents said the fire began at a printing shop nearby. The incident happened on Wednesday (20 May 2026) at 17:10 WIB on Jalan Cipinang Cempedak Raya, Jaktim. One resident, Rani (32), said she was praying at the time and heard residents shouting that there was a fire.

‘After I finished praying at 17:10 WIB, suddenly a big fire appeared, and everyone shouted, “Fire, fire, water, water”. So I immediately went to my house,’ Rani told detikcom.

Rani said as she hurried outside, their electricity was turned off. She said she did not think of saving anything else besides getting away from danger.

‘My father-in-law told me, “Turn it off, the electricity, unplug everything,”. After turning off, I went out. I didn’t think of anything else,’ she explained.

She said the fire started from the building next to her house, which is a printing place. The fire then spread to the back of her house up to the roof.

‘Earlier I saw the bigger fire at the printing shop. The printing shop next door is a refill water bottle place. My house is right next to it. I run a coffee stall, all the coffee stalls. Yes, the back caught fire. It didn’t burn completely; only the back was affected, but the top was completely destroyed,’ she added.

She said she heard explosions during the fire. There were no casualties.

‘Yes, explosions. It popped and crackled. Then the fire spread. Thank God everyone is safe,’ she concluded.

At the scene, detikcom observed at 18:00 WIB that five fire engines were deployed to the location after the incident. Two ambulances had been put on standby.

Residents crowded along Jalan Cempaka V. It was observed that five houses were affected by the fire, and wood debris and furniture were scattered along the street.

Dozens of firefighters were still battling the blaze. The fire flared up occasionally but was quickly subdued.

By 18:50 WIB, the fire had been extinguished. The lights around the area began to come on. The firefighters were still coiling hoses after extinguishing the fire.
