Residents protest waste pollution

MEDAN, North Sumatra: Over 200 residents of Bedagai village, Tanjung Beringin subdistrict in Deli Serdang regency staged a protest in front of the provincial legislature here yesterday against a tapioca factory which they said was dumping industrial waste into the Sei Bedagai River.

A delegation representing the residents met provincial legislators and pointed out that many people suffered from skin diseases due to the river pollution.

The pollution also has rendered the river water useless, prompting villagers to spend extra money to buy clean water for their daily use. (21)
