Residents protest swallow breeding

TANGERANG (JP): Dozens of residents of the Ciater Permai housing complex in Serpong have complained about unauthorized swallow breeding businesses in the area.

One of the residents, Denny Kambaran, said on Wednesday the swallow breeders had not only violated land use regulations in building the bird's cages, but also generated health concerns.

The business has been operating in at least seven houses situated in Block D.

Donny said the residents had filed a complaint with the breeders, but they insisted that their business was approved by the regency administration.

Chief of the local city planning agency Nanang Komara said he had never given approval to the swallow breeders and promised to take action against its operators.

Separately, chief of the public order office, Darmawan Hidayat, admitted he knew nothing about the matter, saying he had been in office for just two months. Swallow nests are used in soups and in some traditional medicines. (41)
