Residents protest slaughterhouse

TANGERANG: Residents of Cempaka Putih village in Ciputat, Tangerang, are complaining about a poultry slaughterhouse that they claim has polluted the neighborhood.

"We have to put up with the stench coming from the slaughterhouse. We have submitted complaints to the owner, the subdistrict and district chiefs, but they have fell on deaf ears," a resident, Juin Saberi, 39, said on Wednesday.

Other residents warned of possible vandalism should the slaughterhouse owner keep on ignoring their demands to close down the business, as they said it was unlicensed.

"We will immediately report this matter to Regent Ismet Iskandar ... the slaughterhouse has no license to operate here," another resident, Kiroat, 32, said.

Separately, Ismet said that he would visit the slaughterhouse together with his assistants from the animal husbandry agency and the public order agency. -- Antara
