Residents' Outcry as Non-Subsidised LPG and Fuel Prices Rise Simultaneously
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – The increase in the price of non-subsidised LPG gas 12 kg from Rp 192,000 to Rp 228,000 has drawn complaints from residents of the capital. This price adjustment is occurring alongside surges in fuel oil (BBM) prices and other essential needs, further straining the economic conditions of the public. This is felt by Michael (24), a resident of Kalideres, West Jakarta. “I just found out that the price has gone up; it’s quite significant at Rp 40,000, you can really feel the increase,” said Michael to Kompas.com on Sunday (19/4/2026). He believes that the rise in energy prices will be followed by surges in other market necessities. Although he has only been using non-subsidised LPG for about a year, Michael claims he had anticipated this increase, in line with the escalation of geopolitical conflict between Iran and the United States. “Actually, it was expected, because it follows the price of flight tickets which depend on avtur. Then the new prices for Pertamax Dex and Pertamax Turbo have risen a lot, so the gas will surely follow,” said Michael. He admitted to being surprised by the quite high price increase amid economic conditions that he feels are getting heavier. According to Pudji, the gas price rise feels even more burdensome because it coincides with increases in various other commodities, including BBM and kitchen ingredients. “If it’s like this, it’s heavy, right? Expenses swell, it’s difficult like that,” said Pudji. He hopes the government can control the prices of basic needs amid ongoing global turmoil. Squeezed by increasingly expensive economic conditions, Michael is starting to reconsider using the subsidised 3 kg gas that he left a year ago.
