Residents of Pajangan in Bantul were startled by the presence of a green peacock. The bird was discovered roaming near a resident’s chicken coop before being captured on Thursday (30/7). Desy Rachmawati, Public Relations of the Yogyakarta Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA), stated that residents initially found the peacock in a weakened condition near the chicken coop, suspected to be starving. “Worried about its condition, the residents then secured the bird and provided it with food and water,” she said when contacted on Monday (3/8/2026). After successfully capturing the peacock, the residents reported their finding to the Yogyakarta BKSDA. Following up on the report, the BKSDA, through the Bantul Regional Conservation Resort, immediately coordinated and deployed a team to the location to evacuate the bird. “The Yogyakarta BKSDA finally evacuated the bird on Saturday (1/8/2026),” she stated. Examination revealed the bird to be a green peacock, or Pavo Muticus, and it is male. “Currently, the green peacock is at the Bunder Animal Protection Unit (UPS) to undergo health checks and care by veterinarians and Yogyakarta BKSDA officers,” she said. The peacock will continue to receive care to ensure its condition recovers before further steps are determined. Regarding the bird’s origin, Desy said that based on information from residents, it is a wild animal that entered the residential area. “However, there is no information yet indicating that the peacock is a pet or a released animal from the community. Therefore, the Yogyakarta BKSDA will continue observation and further examination to ascertain the animal’s condition,” she concluded.
