A number of residents have taken the initiative to create a zebra crossing on Jalan Soepomo in Tebet, South Jakarta, some time ago. Unlike typical road crossings, the self-made zebra crossing by the residents features a Pac-Man style, inspired by the classic video game.

Quoting the Instagram account @berkemas, the zebra crossing on that road had long disappeared. As a result, many pedestrians felt anxious when attempting to cross. For that reason, he, along with several others, initiated the creation of a zebra crossing on that road.

“It’s not just repainted, but also given a Pac-Man style touch to make it more lively,” he said, as quoted by Republika on Sunday (29/3/2026).

Meanwhile, the Head of Data and Information Centre of the Jakarta Provincial Road Infrastructure Agency, Siti Dinarwenny, appreciated the community’s concern and initiative in painting the road to function as a zebra crossing on Jalan Soepomo, South Jakarta. However, the creation of zebra crossings cannot be done arbitrarily.

She explained that the making of road markings, including zebra crossings, must refer to applicable legal regulations and technical standards. “This is important to ensure the safety aspect for all road users, both pedestrians and motor vehicle drivers, and to prevent potential distractions that could disrupt driving concentration,” she said in her statement.

The Road Infrastructure Agency also apologised for the condition of the zebra crossing in that area, which was unavailable for some time. This was due to periodic road maintenance activities and the construction/improvement of sidewalks at the end of 2025. As a result, the existing zebra crossing markings were covered by an asphalt layer.

“Regarding the unavailability of the zebra crossing facility at that location, we convey our apologies for the inconvenience experienced by the community,” said Wenny.

According to her, the reinstallation of road markings cannot be done immediately after asphalt laying. This is because thermoplastic marking material requires the road surface condition to have gone through an optimal drying period so that it can adhere well and have maximum durability.

Nevertheless, the DKI Jakarta Provincial Road Infrastructure Agency has designated that location as a priority in the 2026 road marking maintenance plan, including rebuilding the zebra crossing facility.

“The implementation of the work is planned to be carried out in the near future using road marking materials in accordance with applicable technical standards,” she said.
