Residents in Karo Choose to Evacuate Due to Fears of Mount Sinabung Aftershocks
Residents in Kuta Tengah Village, Simpang Empat District, Karo Regency, have chosen to evacuate due to fears of aftershocks from Mount Sinabung. The villagers have moved to Sukatepu Village.
“We were asked by the government to evacuate, and we complied because we are also afraid of further eruptions,” said Roy Sembarguna at the evacuation site on Wednesday (2/9/2026).
Roy evacuated alongside his wife, parents, and two children, carrying only essential belongings for their stay in Sukatepu. He recalled the period when Sinabung erupted in 2010, noting that he had been forced to move between various locations during that time.
“We only returned to settle in Kuta Tengah Village in 2020; prior to that, we had been moving between evacuation sites since 2010,” he explained.
Eva Br Sinulingga expressed similar sentiments, stating that the decision to evacuate was driven by the fear of subsequent eruptions.
