Residents in Bandung Forced to Use Narrow Tunnel to Transport Deceased to Cemetery
Residents of Kampung Ranca Bayawak, located in the Cisaranten Kidul sub-district, Gedebage district, Bandung, are currently facing issues regarding access to the local cemetery. They are finding it difficult to transport deceased individuals to the burial site because the usual access route is now obstructed by an elite housing estate.
As reported by detikJabar on Wednesday (30/09/2026), the situation was previously shared via the Instagram account @jabargram. The footage shows residents struggling to carry funeral bier through the access point, which has been blocked following the construction of residential areas around the location.
A direct inspection of the site on Tuesday (29/09) afternoon revealed that there is only one remaining path connecting the residential area to the cemetery. While the path at the edge of the village has been paved with paving blocks, residents heading to the cemetery must pass through a tunnel approximately 50 metres long. The tunnel’s height is no more than 2 metres and is quite dark, making it extremely difficult to carry a coffin through.
Despite these challenges, observations on-site indicate that the path is currently used more frequently by residents to access paddy fields, while the primary access route remains Jalan Rancabolang.
Local residents continue to express their disappointment regarding the condition of the cemetery access. Arif, a local resident, stated that the path was much more accessible before the housing estate was built.
“It used to be a regular footpath that could be easily traversed. But now that the housing estate exists, the road is blocked,” he said during a conversation with detikJabar.
