The Bekasi City Government launched evacuations following a landslide at the Bantargebang Integrated Waste Processing Facility (TPST) on Sunday, 8 March. Bekasi Mayor Tri Adhianto expressed concern over the incident.

Tri stressed that the safety of workers and residents in the surrounding area remains the top priority following the Bantargebang landslide. “The location is in Bekasi, but management falls under the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government. What matters now is ensuring that handling proceeds quickly and conditions on the ground are safe,” the Bekasi Mayor said in a statement on Monday, 9 March.

Tri explained that Bekasi City Government, through its Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), assisted in the evacuation process and conducted monitoring in the area surrounding the facility to ensure no further hazards endangered residents.

Additionally, the city took precautionary measures against potential waste spillage, which was feared could flow into Asem Canal or into residential areas in the affected regions. Field personnel were placed on standby to monitor water flow and environmental conditions around the TPST to prevent broader environmental damage.

Tri added that coordination with the Bantargebang TPST operators from the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government continued to ensure rapid handling and swift restoration of control over the situation. “We want to ensure conditions remain safe for workers and surrounding residents. Coordination with the operators is ongoing to ensure optimal handling,” he concluded.

Environment Minister Hanif Faisol Nurofiq on Monday, 9 March, affirmed that following the Bantargebang tragedy, a comprehensive investigation and law enforcement action would be initiated.

West Java Governor Dedi Mulyadi expressed condolences over the Bantargebang TPST landslide in Bekasi and urged all parties to remain vigilant against unforeseen disasters.
