Residents Enthusiastic as Rasuna Said Car Free Day Reopens
The implementation of Car Free Day (CFD) in the Rasuna Said area, South Jakarta, has resumed after a two-week suspension for evaluation purposes. Residents welcomed the return of the event with great enthusiasm. The Rasuna Said CFD operates from 05:30 to 09:00 WIB, covering a route of approximately 4.4 kilometres. The program is set to be officially inaugurated on 22 June 2026, coinciding with Jakarta’s anniversary.
During observations on Sunday (7/6/2026), Jalan Rasuna Said towards Menteng and Mampang Prapatan was closed to vehicles. Residents were seen engaging in various activities, including jogging, cycling, and enjoying traditional ‘ondel-ondle’ performances. Near Plaza Festival, traditional games such as ‘egrang’ (stilts) and ‘gasing’ (spinning tops) were also available for participants.
Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung attended the event to inspect the CFD alongside the Mayor of South Jakarta, Munjirin. The Governor highlighted that the Rasuna Said area is highly accessible to those living outside Jakarta due to the integration of Transjakarta and the LRT services from Bekasi and Cibubur. He expressed his belief that the area’s views, air quality, and accessibility would establish it as a new landmark for Jakarta’s car-free initiatives.
According to the Governor, feedback from the public has been overwhelmingly positive, with approximately 95% of residents requesting that the CFD continue as a regular weekly event. He noted that the remaining 5% of feedback focused on areas for improvement, specifically regarding pedestrian infrastructure and road layout. The Jakarta Provincial Government plans to plant more trees around the area to enhance the environment.
Furthermore, the Governor addressed concerns regarding environmental cleanliness and the regulation of street vendors. He instructed the Mayor of South Jakarta to ensure proper management to avoid the public controversies seen in previous CFD implementations at Sudirman-Thamrin. He emphasised that trading is strictly prohibited on the CFD route, but suggested that enforcement should be handled through softer, more diplomatic approaches to avoid public friction.
