Residents complain of noise, pollution

SEMARANG: Residents of Tugu subdistrict in Semarang municipality, Central Java, have urged the local administration to take all necessary measures to deal with noise and air pollution from a steel plant in the area, and the lack of a piped water supply.

During a dialog with the Semarang's Mayor Sukawi Sutarip, the residents said on Thursday that they feared the noise and air pollution caused by the steel plant had degraded the environment to such an extent that ground water in the area was no longer drinkable.

In response to their complaints, the mayor promised to give the locals a win-win solution after the local Environmental Impact Management Agency conducted a comprehensive study on the factory.

The mayor also pledged to supply clean water to the residents by enhancing cooperation with the plant's management. --Antara
