Residents complain about expanding road collapse in Pulo Gadung since April
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Residents have complained about the condition of a collapsed road on the banks of the Pulo Gadung River in East Jakarta, which has been worsening over the past five months since April 2026 due to shifting towards the river.
“Initially the subsidence was only slight, but every day it continues to shift and widen. This road has been damaged for five months, but there has been no action yet,” said Warjono, Head of RT 11 RW 03 Pulo Gadung, in Pulo Gadung, East Jakarta, on Monday.
Residents are concerned that the worsening damage could lead to traffic accidents and even fatalities if not addressed immediately.
Warjono noted that the road collapse, which initially only affected a few spots, has now expanded to nearly 100 metres in length.
To mitigate the risk of accidents, residents and local administrators have closed the road to four-wheeled vehicles. Currently, only motorcycles are permitted to pass, using a one-way system as the remaining road width is only about one metre.
“This has impacted the neighbourhood and residents, both car and motorcycle users, as well as small and medium enterprise traders. They cannot pass through here and must take a detour because this is the main road used daily. All road users usually pass this way,” Warjono explained.
He added that the collapsed road is an alternative route used daily by the community as a main access point to residential areas and various economic activities.
Warjono suspects the road damage was triggered by excessively deep dredging of the Pulo Gadung River. As a result, the soil structure on the riverbank became unstable and has gradually eroded, dragging the road surface down with it.
“Initially it was only this much, then it shifted and over time it became like this,” Warjono said.
Although no houses have shifted yet, several community facilities have begun to be affected. Some water channels have cracked, the road surface continues to subside, and a waste collection point has also suffered damage.
According to Warjono, there have been no casualties so far due to the road condition. However, residents are increasingly worried because the passable section of the road is getting narrower, while the area is densely populated and used daily by vehicles and children.
“We are worried that at any time a motorcyclist or a child could fall into the river if the road shifts again,” Warjono said.
Warjono expressed hope that the government, through the relevant agencies, would immediately carry out permanent repairs to Jalan Cinta before the condition deteriorates further.
