Residents Call for Jakarta LRT Route Extension to Improve Mobility

Jakarta — Residents are hoping the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government will extend the Jakarta LRT route once Phase 1B of the Velodrome–Manggarai line, which has reached 89 per cent completion, is finished in order to improve public mobility, particularly to densely populated areas and economic centres.

"The hope is that the Jakarta LRT route can be extended to densely populated areas and centres of economic activity," said Kelapa Gading resident Rizki Sunarto in Jakarta on Friday.

He believes the presence of the Jakarta LRT in the Manggarai area represents an important step in strengthening intermodal transport integration. According to him, Manggarai has long been recognised as one of the main transport nodes connecting KRL CommuterLine, the Airport Rail Link, and TransJakarta.

"With the Jakarta LRT connected to that area, residents' mobility becomes much more efficient," Rizki said.

He added that the reach of the Jakarta LRT still needs to be expanded for its benefits to be more widely felt.

Similarly, Dian, a North Jakarta resident, hopes the Jakarta LRT can be extended to residential areas further from the city centre.

"In North Jakarta there are already several public transport options, such as TransJakarta and KRL, but if the Jakarta LRT could reach areas far from the city centre, more people would surely be willing to leave their private vehicles behind," Dian said.

Meanwhile, Indra, a worker in the Sudirman area, said the extension of the Jakarta LRT route could serve as a concrete solution to ease daily congestion.

"If access becomes wider and more integrated, people will think twice about bringing their own cars. This must be supported," Indra said.

He believes the expansion of the LRT route should be directed towards areas with high mobility, such as business districts, educational institutions, and office complexes.

Beyond expanding routes, he said, the public is also pushing for stronger intermodal integration. "Ease of transfer between transport modes is considered a key factor in the success of the mass transit system," Indra concluded.

Previously, DKI Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung said the provincial government is currently focused on completing construction of Jakarta LRT Phase 1B.

"The DKI Jakarta Government is currently completing the LRT from Velodrome to Manggarai. Hopefully, it can begin operating next year," Pramono said.

Once that phase is completed, the provincial government will determine whether the LRT route will be extended to major transport hubs or whether new routes will be opened connecting strategic areas across Jakarta.

"Starting from Velodrome–Kelapa Gading through to Tanjung Priok, then to JIS, from JIS to Ancol, Ancol through to PIK 2, and so on," Pramono said.
