Residents block damaged road in Bekasi

JAKARTA: Residents of Jejalen subdistrict in north Tambun, Bekasi regency, blocked the three-kilometer main road in the area on Monday from 3 a.m. to 11 a.m. to protest the condition of the seriously damaged road.

They made their protest as developers of several housing estates in the area had earlier ignored their demand to repair the road.

The protesters put tree logs, big stones, fences and other things which blocked cars and even motorcycles from passing the on the road. A number of police officers were seen standing guard to prevent any unexpected incidents.

The residents finally removed the blockades after representatives of the developers, who met them in the district office, agreed to fix the damaged road.

"We give the developers three days to start fixing the road, or we will block it again," said D. Rimbang, a representative of the village.

In August, the developers promised to allocate Rp 483 million to fix the road.--Antara
