Residents Baffled as Sawangan Depok Pavement Collapses Only One Year After Completion

The pavement on Jalan Raya Sawangan, Depok, West Java, has collapsed. Local residents were shocked by the incident, as the pavement had only been in use for one year.

Observations at Jalan Raya Sawangan on Sunday (2/8/2026) showed the pavement located on the left side of the lane heading towards Jalan Margonda Raya, connecting to Taman Secawan. The collapsed section has slumped into the river and is currently covered with a blue tarp. The area has been cordoned off with wooden barriers, traffic cones, and yellow tape to prevent pedestrians from using it.

A local resident, Hendra, expressed his shock at the collapse, initially assuming the construction was simply unfinished. “I was shocked to see the pavement collapse. I thought it was still under construction, but I received information from nearby residents that it had subsided. The budget for this was quite significant, around Rp 9.7 billion, so for it to collapse like this suggests something is wrong,” Hendra said at the scene.

He expressed hope for immediate repairs but emphasised that such works must be accompanied by strict supervision of both the budget and construction materials. “It hasn’t even been a year. It is very dangerous, especially since it is by the roadside; I fear if it continues to subside, road users could become victims,” he added.

For context, the area around Jalan Sawangan Raya underwent phased redevelopment until the end of 2024, which included the construction of the pavement connecting to Taman Secawan. At that time, the Depok City Government allocated Rp 10.1 billion for the project. Phase II of the Taman Secawan project was officially inaugurated by the then-Mayor of Depok, M. Idris, on 18 February 2025.
