The researchers found that about 40 percent of the best simulations started with five giant planets, while the remainder required six giant planets. In the six-planet scenario, two extra planets experienced strong gravitational disturbances due to interactions with Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. As a result, both planets were thrown into interstellar space and ceased to be part of the Solar System. The presence of these two lost planets is suspected to have triggered a period of gravitational instability that caused major changes in the orbits of the young planets. The event likely lasted hundreds of millions of years after the Sun formed. Although it sounds destructive, this process actually helped shape the stable arrangement of the Solar System seen today. Interestingly, the study also shows that the existence of two additional planets could explain why the natural satellite systems of Jupiter and Uranus have been able to survive until now. In simulations involving only one extra planet, some of Uranus’s moons became unstable. Conversely, when two extra planets were included, the orbits of the major satellites were maintained much better. Astronomers assess that these findings provide a new picture of the young Solar System, which was far more chaotic than current conditions. Additionally, the research results support the theory that many planetary systems in the universe undergo a process of planet expulsion during the early stages of their evolution. Although the existence of these two lost planets cannot yet be proven directly, the latest simulations show that the possibility is worth considering to explain various unique characteristics of the current Solar System.
