Rescue Teams Race Against Time to Find Earthquake Victims

Rescue teams are fighting to break through the critical first 72 hours to find survivors after a magnitude 7.4 earthquake killed 265 people in western Colombia on Saturday (15/8/2026).

This devastating disaster paralysed residential areas, blocked communication networks, and forced tens of thousands of residents to evacuate.

Efforts to search for survivors of the Colombia earthquake beneath the rubble continue intensively through the third night since the first tremors struck.

This three-day period is regarded as the most crucial survival window by humanitarian agencies.

Hope of saving the lives of trapped victims depends heavily on the availability of water and food in the gaps within the rubble. Although the chances are growing slimmer, signs of life are still being detected by the evacuation teams’ scanning equipment.

Official government data confirms a surge in the death toll across various affected cities. In addition to the fatalities, thousands of other residents have suffered injuries and are missing.

Official records note that around 3,500 people were injured and nearly 500 residents remain unaccounted for. However, an independent citizen-based monitoring site records the number of displaced and missing victims as far higher, reaching 4,100 people.
