The Constitutional Court (MK) replacement justice for Anwar Usman will take his oath this afternoon, Friday, 10 April 2026. The replacement for the brother-in-law of former President Joko Widodo will be sworn in before President Prabowo Subianto.

Coordinating Minister for Law, Human Rights, Immigration, and Correctional Services Yusril Ihza Mahendra stated that the oath-taking will take place at the State Palace in Jakarta. “We have been invited to the Palace to attend the inauguration of the Constitutional Court justice,” Yusril said upon arriving at the Palace.

In addition to the Constitutional Court justice’s oath, Prabowo will appoint several other officials. Among them, according to Yusril, are members of the Republic of Indonesia Ombudsman and several ambassadors. “These three points are mentioned in the invitation for this afternoon,” he said.

However, Yusril has not yet revealed the identity of the person who will be sworn in as the MK justice replacing Anwar Usman. Anwar is no longer a constitutional justice as he has entered retirement.

Previously, the Supreme Court announced three names of candidate MK justices to replace Anwar Usman, who retired on 6 April 2026. The three names are listed in Announcement Letter Number 46/WKMA.YKP1.1/III/2026 regarding the Results of the Open Selection for Constitutional Court Justice Candidates from the Supreme Court of the Republic of Indonesia for the 2026 Fiscal Year, signed by Deputy Chief Justice for Judicial Affairs and Selection Committee Chairman Suharto on 9 March 2026 in Jakarta.

The three candidate MK justices who passed are Fahmiron, Liliek Prisbawono Adi, and Marsudin Nainggolan.

Anwar Usman previously delivered a farewell address during a hearing held on Monday, 16 March 2026. He bid farewell before reading the ruling in Case Number 176/PUU-XXIII/2025.

The brother-in-law of the seventh president, Joko Widodo, said that today’s ruling hearing would be the last he would attend. “Before I read the ruling, this may be the last hearing I will participate in, because on 6 April I will have served 15 years at the Constitutional Court,” he said in the MK Plenary Meeting Room, Jakarta.

Anwar admitted that during his time as a constitutional justice, he was not free from making mistakes. Therefore, before entering retirement, Anwar apologised to all parties for his errors during his tenure as a constitutional justice. “From the depths of my heart, I convey my apologies,” he said.

Anwar Usman was appointed as a constitutional justice on the recommendation of the Supreme Court since 6 April 2011. He then continued his position as a constitutional justice for a second term in 2016 and served as Deputy Chief Justice of the MK.

On 2 April 2018, Anwar was elected as MK Chief Justice, replacing Arief Hidayat, for a term until 2020. He was then re-elected to that position for a second term, namely the 2023-2028 term, before being removed from that position due to proven ethical violations.

Anwar was then deemed involved in a conflict of interest in deciding Case Number 90/PUU-XXI/2023 regarding the age requirements for presidential and vice-presidential candidates, known as Ruling 90.

That decision was said to have paved the way for Jokowi’s son, who is also his nephew, Gibran Rakabuming Raka, to run as a vice-presidential candidate in the 2024 presidential election. However, Gibran, who was 36 years old at the time, did not meet the minimum age requirement for candidacy, which was set at 40 years.
