Repairs to Collapsed MTs Badrussalam Accelerated, Target Completion Before New School Year
The Mataram City Government has confirmed it will accelerate the rehabilitation of the MTs Badrussalam NW Sekarbela building, which collapsed on Saturday (20/6/2026), targeting completion before the new school year to avoid disrupting teaching and learning activities. Mayor Mohan Roliskana distributed aid of Rp 50 million to ease the school’s rehabilitation costs during a direct inspection on Tuesday (23/6/2026). “I have urged that the repairs be expedited. With new student admissions approaching, we must ensure there are no obstacles to the learning process,” Mohan said during an interview at MTs Badrussalam NW Sekarbela. The repair process is currently in the assessment stage by the Mataram City Public Works and Spatial Planning Agency (PUPR). The city government is also involving the Social Affairs Agency to support post-incident handling. “It may need to be adjusted according to the condition of the building’s main structure,” he added. The MTs Badrussalam NW Sekarbela building is an old structure established in the 1980s. Mohan estimated that repairs to the upper part of the building would use lighter materials for future safety considerations. “It is understandable that it suffered quite severe damage. So for the upper repairs, we might use lighter materials to make it safer,” Mohan stated. The Mataram City Government is also opening opportunities for schools across Mataram, whether foundation-run or private, to request assessments regarding the physical condition of their buildings. “It’s fine, we can do it. We are ready. PUPR Mataram also has a team for that,” he emphasised. It was previously reported that two classrooms at MTs Badrussalam NW Sekarbela, located in Gang Al Musthofa, Jalan Sultan Kaharudin, Mataram, collapsed on Saturday (20/6/2026) afternoon. The two rooms that collapsed were for grades 8 and 9. “The incident occurred around 4.30 p.m. last Saturday. In the morning, we distributed report cards and there were no further activities afterwards,” said Istiarah, Head of MTs Badrussalam NW Sekarbela, during an interview at her office on Monday (22/6/2026). Istiarah confirmed there were no casualties as the school was empty and there was no activity. She suspected the building collapsed due to its age. “The building has been standing since 1984 and only underwent its last renovation in 1995. The building is old. We had actually anticipated this; the room had been emptied and was not allowed to be occupied,” Istiarah revealed. As a result of the incident, the roof and all contents of the room, including desks and chairs, were severely damaged. MTs Badrussalam NW Sekarbela estimates material losses exceeding Rp 1 billion. “The entire roof collapsed, and the desks and chairs were also damaged. We estimate the total losses at more than Rp 1 billion. We plan to build a concrete slab later so there are no worries in the future,” Istiarah said.
