Rental Car Pawned Off: Tangerang Police Officer Demoted and Faces Criminal Charges
A member of the Tangerang City Police (Polresta), Banten Regional Police, identified by the initials Bripka AI, has been handed a demotion sanction after being found to have been involved in a rental car fraud and embezzlement case.
“The verdict has been issued — a demotion with special detention, which in police terms means special placement,” said the Head of the Internal Affairs Section of Tangerang City Police, Adjunct Commissioner Imam Ruspandi, in Tangerang on Monday, 16 February 2026.
The officer was reported on suspicion of embezzling a rental car by pawning a white Toyota Calya with registration number B 2479 JUL, which he had rented, to another person for Rp25 million.
Imam said the officer had already undergone a police disciplinary hearing over the matter, which involved reports from two victims in the fraud case and one additional victim related to a debt dispute.
“There is another victim named Ibu Tati, from whom approximately Rp50 million was borrowed but has not yet been returned,” he said.
He revealed that despite having already received the demotion sanction, the officer will still undergo legal proceedings for the criminal offence, which is being handled directly by the Criminal Investigation Unit of Tangerang City Police.
“We are still awaiting the process from the Criminal Investigation Unit for the general criminal case,” he said.
Imam added that his division is open to receiving further reports should there be other members of the public who have fallen victim to fraud by the officer.
“Should the investigation process prove that violations have occurred, the Internal Affairs Division will ensure that firm action is taken against the individual concerned in accordance with prevailing laws and regulations, whether in terms of the code of ethics, disciplinary measures, or criminal prosecution,” he said.
