Remembering Try Sutrisno, Ibas: He Was a Constitutional Fighter and National Patriot

Jakarta – Vice Chairman of the People’s Consultative Assembly of the Republic of Indonesia (MPR RI), Edhie Baskoro Yudhoyono, commonly known as Ibas, has expressed profound condolences over the death of Indonesia’s sixth Vice President, Try Sutrisno, who served from 1993 to 1998 and passed away at the age of 90.

“Verily, to Allah we belong and to Him we shall return. May Allah Almighty accept all the righteous deeds of the deceased, forgive all his shortcomings, and place him in the best place by His side,” Ibas stated in a press release on Monday, 2 March 2026.

Ibas further emphasised that Try Sutrisno was a national leader who upheld constitutional values. “Throughout his service, he consistently fought for the nation’s constitution in pursuit of justice and the prosperity of the people. This dedication became an important foundation in the journey of our democracy and national life,” Ibas said.

Ibas expressed confidence that the next generation would continue Sutrisno’s thoughts and service with the aim of building a sovereign Indonesia that sides with the people. “As the succeeding generation, we feel we have a moral responsibility to continue his thoughts and service. What he has left behind is not merely history, but also a direction and spirit to continue building a stronger, sovereign Indonesia that serves the people. May these values of struggle continue to live and serve as inspiration for us, the children of the nation,” he added.

Ibas characterised Try Sutrisno as a true patriot and nationalist who always thought of Indonesia’s advancement. He also noted Sutrisno’s unwavering commitment to serving the nation. “He was a true fighter, patriot, and nationalist who always thought of the nation’s progress. His sincerity, courage, and commitment to serving the nation are an invaluable legacy. Indonesia has lost one of its finest sons, but his spirit of struggle will continue to live in every step of our nation’s development,” Ibas explained.

“May Allah forgive him, have mercy upon him, grant him well-being and pardon him. We also pray that the extended family of Vice President Try Sutrisno be granted patience, endurance, and strength to face this loss,” Ibas added.

Try Sutrisno was a graduate of the Army Technical Academy in 1959 and had an extensive record of service to the nation. He served as Chief of Staff of the Army (1986–1988) and Commander of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Indonesia (1988–1993) before assuming the position of Vice President of the Republic of Indonesia.
