The Indonesian military and defence community mourns the passing of General TNI (Ret.) Ryamizard Ryacudu, a true soldier who dedicated his entire life to the sovereignty of the Republic of Indonesia (NKRI). The former Defence Minister and Army Chief of Staff (KSAD) was known for his firm, straightforward character and unwavering commitment to Pancasila ideology.

Born in Palembang, South Sumatra, Ryamizard was the son of legendary military figure Major General TNI Musannif Ryacudu. The soldier’s blood flowing through his veins shaped his strong leadership character from his time at the Military Academy (Akmil), graduating in 1974. His career advanced rapidly in combat roles, from field commander to strategic positions such as Commander of Jakarta Military Region (Pangdam Jaya) and Commander of Kostrad.

His military career peaked when he was appointed Army Chief of Staff (KSAD) from 2002 to 2005. During his tenure, he was known for prioritising soldiers’ welfare and strengthening the total people’s defence doctrine. His name was briefly considered for the position of TNI Commander, but political dynamics at the time led him to serve in different capacities.

During President Joko Widodo’s first term (2014-2019), Ryamizard served as Defence Minister. In this role, he championed the concept of ‘Bela Negara’ (National Defence Awareness), asserting that national defence was not merely a matter of weapons and the military, but a responsibility for all citizens to love and protect the homeland from foreign ideological threats.

Ryamizard was also renowned as a skilled regional defence diplomat. He actively initiated trilateral maritime patrols between Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines to address terrorism and piracy threats in the Sulu Sea. His firm stance on safeguarding border sovereignty earned him respect from international counterparts.

Now, the ‘Bela Negara’ General has completed his sacred duty. His legacy of nationalism and steadfastness in preserving national unity will endure in the hearts of soldiers and the Indonesian people. Rest in peace, General. Thank you for your boundless service to the Motherland. (H-3)
