Remember the SNI Helmet Rules Again: Risk a Rp 250,000 Fine for Defying Them
JAKARTA—Social media has recently been abuzz with a viral video showing Iman Sutiawan, Chairman of the Riau Islands DPRD, riding a large motorcycle without wearing a helmet. This action has drawn sharp criticism from netizens. Given his position as a public official, such behaviour is seen as setting a poor example in terms of road safety. Based on Article 106 paragraph (8), it is stipulated that every person driving a motorcycle and every motorcycle passenger must wear a helmet that meets Indonesian National Standards (SNI). “Every person driving a Motorcycle and every Motorcycle Passenger must wear a helmet that meets Indonesian National Standards.” For those who persist in defiance, they should prepare to face fines or imprisonment. The police have full authority to take action against violators of this rule. Referring to Article 291 paragraphs (1) and (2), the penalties for violators are as follows: For Drivers: Motorcycle drivers who do not wear SNI helmets are sentenced to a maximum imprisonment of 1 (one) month or a maximum fine of Rp 250,000 (two hundred and fifty thousand rupiah). For Passengers: Drivers who allow their passengers not to wear helmets are subject to the same penalties, namely a maximum imprisonment of 1 (one) month or a maximum fine of Rp 250,000. “As public officials, they should be able to set a good example for society in complying with road safety rules, because what public figures do is usually more easily observed and imitated by the general public,” said Agus Sani, Head of Safety Riding Promotion at Wahana, when contacted by Kompas.com recently. Many riders excuse themselves by saying they are only travelling short distances, so using “cetok” helmets or bicycle helmets is sufficient. However, technically, non-SNI helmets are not designed to absorb impacts at motor vehicle speeds. SNI helmets have undergone various fitness tests, from strap strength tests, impact resistance, to penetration resistance. Using non-standard helmets is tantamount to leaving the head without maximum protection. So, before turning the ignition key and pulling the throttle, ensure the helmet is properly fitted and the strap is secured with a “click”. Remember, the asphalt shows no mercy to those it strikes.
