Remember Kevin Silaban? The Paskibraka Who Continued His Duty Despite His Father's Death

The story of Kevin Silaban became one of the most moving narratives to capture public attention during the 80th anniversary of the Republic of Indonesia’s independence on 17 August 2025. The Paskibraka member from Lintong Nihuta District, Humbang Hasundutan Regency, North Sumatra, continued to carry out his national duty despite having just lost his father.

Kevin had to face a difficult situation only days before last year’s independence ceremony. His father, Ramot Silaban, died on 15 August 2025 at the age of 59. The deceased was a resident of Siponjot Village, Lintong Nihuta District, and Kevin’s biological father.

Amid his grief, Kevin chose to fulfil his responsibility as a Paskibraka member. He served as the platoon commander for the Paskibraka of Lintong Nihuta District.

Kevin’s story drew attention after photographs showing him at the funeral home circulated on social media. In the photos, Kevin appeared to be paying his final respects to his father’s body.

The moment illustrated the weight of the choice Kevin had to make. On one hand, he was facing the loss of his closest relative. On the other, he bore the responsibility of serving as a Paskibraka member in the series of events marking Indonesia’s Independence Day.

On Sunday, 17 August 2025, Kevin ultimately left the funeral home to lead his unit. He carried out his duties at Merdeka Field in Simataniari, Lintong Nihuta District, including the raising of the Red and White flag.

Despite his sorrow, Kevin remained composed and completed his assignment. His conduct earned appreciation from the public and netizens who learned of the story behind his service on independence day.

Humbang Hasundutan Regent Oloan P Nababan also conveyed his condolences over the death of Ramot Silaban. He visited the funeral home before the burial procession.

Oloan said Kevin’s decision to continue his duties despite losing a parent demonstrated great dedication and a strong sense of responsibility as a son of the nation.

“This shows the dedication of a son of the nation who continued to carry out his duty of raising and lowering the flag for the 80th anniversary of Indonesia’s independence, even while in deep mourning,” he said.
