Relocation of Capital from Jakarta to IKN Deemed Not a Simple Matter

JAKARTA - Member of the House of Representatives Commission II, Indrajaya, assesses that relocating the national capital from Jakarta to the Nusantara Capital (IKN) is not an easy matter. He believes that President Prabowo Subianto must have considerations before issuing a presidential decree (Keppres) on moving the national capital from Jakarta to IKN. “If the Keppres has not been issued to date, it means there are still several important matters that must be prepared thoroughly, because relocating the national capital is not a simple matter,” Indrajaya stated in his remarks, quoted on Friday (15/5/2026). In Constitutional Court Decision No. 71/PUU-XXIV/2026, it is emphasised that Jakarta remains the national capital as long as the Keppres related to its relocation to IKN has not been issued. “The Constitutional Court decision must serve as the final reference in ensuring that all national strategic policies proceed based on legal certainty, not merely political will. This is an affirmation that every stage of the capital relocation must have clear constitutional legitimacy,” Indrajaya said. In the process, the effectiveness of government, constitutional legitimacy, readiness of state apparatus, and budget use must be ensured. “Relocating the capital is a major national agenda that must be prepared thoroughly and comprehensively. It is not enough to just build buildings and facilities, but also to ensure that all aspects of government governance are ready to be implemented effectively,” Indrajaya stated.
